Every family has a story about the person who left. For the Whitfields, that person is Reggie. Ten years ago, something happened that tore the family apart. Reggie left, and over the years, his absence became part of the family story. Everyone seems to know what happened. Everyone seems to know who was to blame.
Then Corrine invited him back.
As the annual Whitfield reunion approaches, Corrine writes to her niece Yvonne, the one member of the family who has always managed to stay outside its politics. At first, her letters are filled with the familiar details of reunion preparations - the food, the house, the cousins, the old arguments that somehow never change. But beneath the preparations, something is shifting.
Reggie's return brings old rivalries back to the surface. Questions the family stopped asking begin coming up again. And Corrine, who has spent ten years keeping everyone from turning against one another, finds herself facing a truth she has never been willing to put into words. Because the story the Whitfields have been telling about that night may not be the whole story. And this time, someone intends to tell the rest.
